Data published by Educational Testing Service (ETS), the administrator of the GRE, show that sectional average scores for the last three testing years (featuring nearly 600,000 test-takers) are about 150 verbal, 153 quantitative, and 3.5 analytical writing. Brazilian citizens are fairly close to this overall average, with mean scores of approximately 148 verbal, 152 quantitative, and 2.9 analytical writing. Among test-takers who identified their intended graduate field of study, the largest groups came from the life sciences (18% of the total), engineering (13%), and social sciences (13%). Prospective engineering students achieved high mean quantitative scores (nearly 158), but their average verbal performance (148) was not nearly as accomplished. Students in the social sciences showed the opposite trend, but with discrepancies that were not as pronounced (153 verbal versus 150 quantitative). Average verbal and quantitative scores for aspiring graduate students in the life sciences were 151 and 150 respectively. General trends in GRE testing can help individual students identify potential areas of weakness and inform GRE preparation.

Meet a Rio de Janeiro GRE Tutor: Brenton S.
Brenton S. is one of Manhattan Review's most versatile GRE educators. He has more than 10 years of experience teaching group classes and private tutoring sessions in on-site and online formats, and he also worked as a secondary-level math educator for six years. He recently joined Manhattan Review's Rio de Janeiro GRE faculty after a distinguished record of service for us at our home office in New York City.
Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Brenton holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Carleton College and a master's degree in education from the University of Michigan. While he was in New York, he taught at several high schools in the city's public school system. In his spare time, Brenton enjoys rock climbing, skydiving, and rooting for his home-state Minnesota Twins.
